How to jumpstart a car battery with jumper cables

A dead battery can happen to any of us. Fortunately with just jumper cable and another vehicle you can be back on the road in no time but its important to do it the right way. Having and keeping a self contained jumper box or jumper cables in the vehicle is a good idea.

Just Follow These Simple Steps

To properly jump start your car first thing to do is park the working vehicle right next to the dead one without having them touch. When your connecting to the vehicle that’s being started, you want to make sure the keys in both cars is out of the ignition and all accessories are off. You want to connect to the positive (+) terminal first and you want to connect the negative (-) somewhere on the engine block since the starter is connected to the engine which, give it a solid ground connection.

Now that both cars are turned off and in park: connect jumper cables in the following order:

[1] now connect one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal on the dead battery.

[2] now connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal on the good battery.

[3] now connect the Black clamp to the negative (-) terminal on the good battery.

[4] now connect connect the negative (-) somewhere on the engine block since the starter is connected to the engine which, give it a solid ground connection. Never connect to the negative (-) terminal on the bad battery, this may result in in a spark and can set the battery on fire.

[5] Last Step; Start the good vehicle and let it run for about a good 5min. After letting the DEAD battery charge try Starting it, if it starts immediately remove the jumper cables in the opposite order. If the engine doesn’t turn over repeat the charging prossess over again. Once the jumper cables are removed let the vehicle idle or drive for least 20min to insure the DEAD battery has enough time to fully charge. GOOD LUCK!
